The Putnam City Church of Christ first started meeting in the fall of 1939 when members of the congregations at the 10th & Francis Church of Christ and 12th & Drexel Church of Christ committed to the establishment of the Lord’s work in the Putnam City community and surrounding area.
They started meeting at the Putnam City school building and held their first gospel meeting outdoors in an open-air tent on the school grounds that was conducted by F. William Mattox. Later, about 30 to 40 members began holding services at 5820 Northwest 41st Street. In 1943, the church purchased 199 feet of land west of their building site and over the next two years four expansion programs were undertaken.
In 1960, the original property was sold and a new location acquired that would provide more room for expansion and parking. A 2.5 acre lot was purchased at the corner of Northwest 42nd & Ann Arbor and the original property was sold to Jack Cherry and Gene Adams in August 1962 for a funeral home called Gene Adams Funeral Home. Today it is now known as Guardian West.
The Church constructed a basement on the new property where they worshiped until 1963 when the building was completed and an open house was held December 1, 1963 where the church continues to reside to this day.
Our goal today, and the future, is to continue worshiping God as He has commanded and to take the Gospel to others in this community and around the world as commanded in Mark 16:15.
We welcome those who will commit with us in carrying out this great effort to all mankind.
